An Artist’s Pursuit of Beauty

I am an artist…an amateur one, but an artist just the same. I am a painter and a sculptor. When I started my artistic pursuits years ago, I relied on a very few tools…just an occasional colored pencil or two, gently sketching. Now it is my custom to employ an assortment of mediums and a variety of techniques.

I am a painter…

Today I use a combination of 18 balms and gels mixed with colorful crystals and powders to make the subtle, yet striking hues. I use an

assortment of seven brushes in a variety of strokes to capture the light ever so slightly. With every stroke of the brush, the canvas disappears; any flaws on the surface begin to vanish. My work reflects the season…it also reflects my mood.

I am a sculptor…

Today I start with a raw visceral substance. Given its mass, I spend time and prepare the surface…sanding rough spots, adding moisture to dryer areas. Modern material provides me with multiple options to use in a technique that is centuries old – compression casting. I use all my strength to reposition the substance. It is important that it holds its shape.

I am a critic…

I step back and scrutinize my creation. I don my glasses to inspect it at a distance. I examine every angle to ensure the perfection that I seek. I am satisfied. Beauty achieved.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder…

I am tentative as my artistic endeavor is inspected. I watch the eyes as he takes in all of my creativity. My emotions are at the surface as I wait the judgment. Then it comes… “You look nice, but are you going to wear any lipstick?”
